#17. Some Sort of Title with Solace In It

Music: Route 209 (Super Smash Bros. Brawl version.)

"adjective noun is adjective" is the stupidest thing.

Someone with sense out in this wilderness!

Well then, let's see what we can pull up with this. It's gotta be better than—

Oh you butt.

Oh!

Such sophistication for something covered in a film of mucus~

Goldeen

Goldeen is a very beautiful Pokémon with fins that billow elegantly in water. Its tail fin resembles an elegant ballroom dress, giving it the nickname of "The Water Queen". However, don't let your guard down around this Pokémon—it could ram you powerfully with its horn. Goldeen loves swimming wild and free in rivers and ponds. If one of these Pokémon is placed in an aquarium, it will shatter even the thickest glass with one ram of its horn and make its escape. In the springtime, schools of Goldeen can be seen swimming up falls and rivers. A strong swimmer, it is capable of swimming nonstop up fast streams at a steady speed of five knots per hour.
Choro Notes: Shitty little fish, which didn't stop me from using one in my actual Platinum playthrough. Goldeen are another in the group of "Water-types that benefited from physical water-type moves" monsters. Other than that, there's nothing really outstanding about them. They're kind of pretty though. vOv

HulkaMatt Notes: HAVE I SAID ALL WATER POKEMON ARE AWESOME YET? IF NOT THEN THEY ARE. GOLDEEN IS IN THAT CATEGORY. AWESOME FISH WITH A HORN ON ITS HEAD~!

Leppa Berry

It takes longer to grow than Berries such as Cheri. The smaller Berries taste better.
It restores PP, which is handy if you're in the field, have no ethers and are too far from a Pokémon Center.

Time to crush some dreams. :/

Can't feel as bad if they were the ones that provoked it, though.

Choro Notes: REND INTO PIECES.

Well yes, it's quite obvious~.

Oh no, I've seen your type before.

WEAK.

PEH.

TINY.

ENTIRE TEAM IS BABIES.

Choro Notes: This is the point where a Spiritomb would attack if I had done that whole underground wifi talking to people thing.

Grass, let's do the whole hunt for things for Prof. Rowan thing.

One of those intimidating starlings.

Staravia

Staravia flies around forests and fields in search of bug Pokémon. Recognizing their own weakness, they always live in a group. When alone, a Staravia cries noisily. Squabbles over territory occur when flocks collide.
Choro Notes: A tough little bird who compares with Pidgeot strength-wise. (This says more about Pidgeot than anything.) Notoriously annoying because they're found fucking everywhere from this point out. Staravia and Bibarel EVERYWHERE.

HulkaMatt Notes: Token 1st stage evolution bird pokemon. Coming along nicely, this is gonna be one nice law abiding bird!!! I hope it doesnt dye its hair red and make it grow long enough that it slightly covers the eye in the near future.

Er, uh. Let's. Let's wait until it's not as dark out, Viola. Yeah.

OH F- ROCKS. GET THE ROCKS OUT.

Duskull

Duskull wanders lost among the deep darkness of midnight. It can pass through any wall no matter how thick it may be, while a glare from its single scarlet eye makes even burly grown-ups freeze in utter fear. Once this Pokémon chooses a target, it will doggedly pursue the intended victim until the break of dawn. It loves the crying of children. There is an oft-told admonishment given to misbehaving children that this Pokémon will spirit away bad children who earn scoldings from their mothers.
Choro Notes: Lil' sponge of a ghost, they're decent little monsters but I really don't have much to say about Duskull. It always annoys me when I see fanart of duskull with two eyes behind the skull.
HulkaMatt Notes: My other favorite non evolved ghost pokemon that is not gastly!!! These guys look AWESOME. One of my fav lookin pokemon.

Oh my. Uh.

We're strong enough, right Viola? Self control. Self con. . I want an egg, right now. Right. Now.

Chansey

Chansey lays nutritionally excellent eggs on an everyday basis. The eggs are so delicious, they are easily and eagerly devoured by even those people who have lost their appetite. It walks carefully to prevent its egg from breaking. However, it is extremely fast at running away. Being few in number and difficult to capture, it is said to bring happiness to the Trainer who catches it. Being compassionate, it shares its eggs with injured people. However, it won't share them with those who have evil in their hearts.
Choro Notes: Fuck finding these things. FUCK catching these things. FUCK trying to get Lucky Eggs from these things. Chansey have a shitton of HP but next to no defense. It can take a hit, sure but anything after that and it'll go down like an egg in a microwave.

HulkaMatt Notes: EGGS!!! SO MANY EGGS. Chansey fuckin heal your pokemon. They're great. Never have a bad thing to say about a Chansey. They're cool.
.

Choro Notes: Steel-type moves are actually not that great. They're super-effective against Ice and Rock and. . . that's about it. They're also notoriously not very accurate.

!

Hey, Jorge.

Jorge you don't have to—

*sigh* Jorge. . .

Choro Notes: See this? See how he's telling you exactly where Defog is? Despite this you still had goons asking where to get Defog back when it was relevant.

Yeah, have fun Jorge.

Music: Solaceon Town and Pastoria City. (Midday)

Persim Berry

The more this berry absorbs energy from sunlight, the more vividly colorful it grows.
It cures confusion automatically for the holder.

Choro Notes: Dusk Balls! Solaceon Town's special ball. They're powered up in caves and at night.

I will not regret this.

Also, since Lady has three badges she's got Revives available to her.

Choro Notes: Another app that does exactly what it says.

Simple enough.

Noted.

As much of a fan of two elderly strangers as I can be, sure.

Choro Notes: Very useful when breeding Pokémon. It not only shows you the current levels of your monsters, it tells you when an egg has appeared. Speaking of which:

Uhhhhh. . .

The Pokédex posted:

Chansey lays nutritionally excellent eggs on an everyday basis.
I guess this is just what they tell the kids here so they don't have to explain the whole thing?

Ok, Jorge said ruins so. Ruins. I could use another HM

Music: HeartGold/Soul Silver - Ruins of Alph (This isn't the music that plays here, it's just the standard cave music. But this is one of my favorite songs in the series.)

Lots of these, whatever could they mean? No sense in trying to figure it out.

I guess someone's just giving them away?

EEE!

Unown

This Pokémon is shaped like ancient writing and its flat, thin body is always stuck on walls. It is a mystery as to which came first, the ancient writings or the various Unown. When alone, nothing happens. However, if there are two or more, an odd power is said to emerge. They appear to communicate via radio waves. Research into this topic is ongoing but nothing is known.
Choro Notes: Weakest of legendary Pokémon. Unown ONLY learn Hidden Power. They're pretty much strictly a gimmick Pokémon. This didn't stop one with an electric hidden power from wrecking Falkner in HeartGold for me. I actually like the concept of the Unown, there's just something about them that intrigues me.

HulkaMatt Notes: They're living spaghettios.

Shiny magic rocks, mysterious~.

Uhhh. EN?

. . . . . . . .

Alright! Loot.

Oh hey I know what to do with this.

Choro Notes: Another plate for our collection. The mind plate is obviously the psychic-type plate.

It smells like. . . absinthe and fresh croissants.
Choro Notes: Incense has effect on pokémon when they hold it. (This one boosts psychic-type attacks.) However, if held by certain species when breeding, it alters the egg produced. In this case, a Mr. Mime will produce Mime Jr. eggs instead of Mr. Mime eggs.

Oh, and an engraving.

. . . Nope, don't care.

Yes, my wile should be made worth.

Cooperation, it makes the world more likely to give me things.

Doug Dinsdale posted:

I can't recall at all if I had any hand in naming Solaceon. In retrospect, it wasted a potential Eevee evo name. Maybe I was also thinking of Halcion, the insomnia pill.

Also, Chansey's Dex entry. Being from Gen 1, it contained the word "evil." We had to take all references of such out later on like "evil" and "soul" and "god." That sure made for some challenged writing downstream. My mind melted when I first saw Cyrus's rants.

I also see that Day Care has now been changed to two words. Throughout the franchise history, I've been told it's one word, two hyphenated words, or two words. It's a little quibbly thing, but it's the sort of thing that gets my goat.

And, yeah Jorge is annoying, but I hope it comes across that he really does love you, and that he grows up.
It goes back to my view that Pokémon is a little kid's entry-level RPG at heart. I see Jorge as a mirror to that player, all dumb and eager at first, who "grows up" by learning what it means to be a trainer.
